joy amid uncertainty

The quiet week between Christmas and New Year's is always productive. It's usually a quiet, restful time for me, filled with opportunities to get work done without the telephone ringing. This holiday season carries with it a good bit of foreboding. The news is filled with the sadness of Benazir Bhutto's slaying, and the impending announcements of massive losses due to imprudent sub-prime lending practices by major institutional lenders.

I do not believe that one profits by putting a false front onto troubling times, but I do think there is a virtue in taking things one step at a time. This curious fellow named William George Jordan spoke of the "tonic strength" in "getting back to the simple duties and interests we have slighted and forgotten". I am all for finding simple ways to focus on the task at hand--making the world a little less grim.
