Shell story

I drove a road once through some fields
once prehistoric sea
Where ancient shells stood petrified
you could pick up for free

Nobody knew the road was there
but those who lived nearby
the shells sit there ungathered still
while motorists pass by.

A sliver shell beneath the scope
I focus and I zoom
yet all I see are lines and whorls
and passing hints of doom.

We all could live like shells once did
we live like shells do still
We gather shells as we pass by
Our shells the roadways fill.

I drove a road once through some fields
through prehistoric sea
I pick up shells then set them down
and drive on as if free.
