autumn plantings

"I know it must be winter (though I sleep) --
I know it must be winter, for I dream
I dip my bare feet in the running stream,
And flowers are many, and the grass grows deep".--Edith M. Thomas, from "Winter Sleep"

I rose early today, but not too early, and got work done even before I drove to work. The weather is cool, like Autumn, but not too cool. I am mourning a house plant today which got water and sun, but not enough or too much of one or the other or both. I choose houseplants which are hardy, so that I rarely lose any, but I suspect this one accidentally got left indoors away from the sun by a kind spouse who erred, when the plant variety requires sun to thrive.

I remember once being on a daytrip to Hamburg, Germany, which perhaps stands out in my mind in part because my life is not full of German daytrips. The June day came up chilly by the standards of my then-California home, a brooding, Texas-in-October kind of day, when rabbits hopped in the park. I remember lots of tall brick apartment buildings, and in nearly each window, small cacti growing. Cacti I understand. Their needs are simple, and easily met. They will thrive if they are within the range of being met. If they are fully met, they will bloom. In every German window I wish for cactus bloom.
