My sister-in-law was on local television tonight, doing a great job advocating for defibrillators in public schools. My nephew was lost at 16 to sudden cardiac arrest, a little over two years ago. Direct advocacy by one deeply affected seems so straightforward, and perhaps that's its great virtue.

My sister called tonight, as she drove into Dallas. Her family is taking a short vacation before her husband goes on a lengthy foreign work assignment. I wish I could see them during this brief trip, but I am just a bird, only I am not much like Nelly Furtado.

I'm back from one city, but flying at dawn to another. I think that Dick Powell is my favorite Phillip Marlowe.
