Silly Town Poll

I confess I have a terrible weakness for the idea of community. I always feel outside looking in, but I always take great comfort that there is/can be a community, even if I must peer through the glass. I thought I'd play with that idea by writing a poll which alternates the mildly, provincially absurd with a thought or two. Won't you come play?

Poll #256479 In my little neighborhood

I wish my neighbors' windows showed off:

lighted pink flamingo displays
6(16.7%)
giant lamps in the shape of stockinged legs
8(22.2%)
giant purple butterfly kites
12(33.3%)
Gothic lettering saying "What would Scooby Do?"
2(5.6%)
hand-colored etchings of mountain ranges
8(22.2%)

I wish the local coffee shop featured:

a duo playing synthesizer and wash board, very non-melodically
3(8.3%)
a Saturday afternoon of "sing along to Dale Evans records"
8(22.2%)
an open mike for Sting impersonators
13(36.1%)
all accordion, all the time
5(13.9%)
a rapid-fire spoon orchestra
7(19.4%)

Among the following choices, each home in my town would have Spring baskets of:

pansies
17(45.9%)
black eyed susans
9(24.3%)
geraniums
4(10.8%)
easter cactus
6(16.2%)
dried bermuda grass
1(2.7%)

The thing I cannot believe is:

The way my neighbors and I live hundreds of different lives, in such close proximity
13(36.1%)
the way I move through life oblivious of those around me
2(5.6%)
the way I always feel safe where I live, even if the feeling may be illusory
10(27.8%)
how much I long to feel a part of some kind of community, but I don't.
2(5.6%)
how much of my sense of neighborhood exists purely on-line
9(25.0%)

The nicest gift a stranger ever gave to me was:

an indoor plant
3(8.3%)
a book
9(25.0%)
an article of clothing
1(2.8%)
a kiss
5(13.9%)
none, or other
18(50.0%)

List one thing that you wish your community parks program offered in a low-cost "fun" educational course

You are assigned to draw a mural on your elementary school's wall. You wish to draw something positive, and leave behind all the irritation and disquiet you felt sometimes as a kid. What would you paint?
