Summer first

skipper on a coreopsis in bloom

After work I stopped by Oak Point Preserve. A few weeks ago, thistles bloomed and butterflies hovered among them. Now the thistle blooms are gray seed pods. Coreopsis and little red trumpet-like flowers and purple flowers dominate. The butterflies are no longer huge swallowtails, but instead small flickers and sulphurs.

I watched a belted kingfisher swoop down and catch a mosquito fish, before settling back on a railing perch. Grasshoppers, now brown instead of newly-minted green, hopped everywhere.

I got good news from a fellow in Manitoba today.
