keeping cool on pleasant october days

"Say to yourself in the early morning: I shall meet today ungrateful, violent, treacherous, envious, uncharitable men. All of these things have come upon them through ignorance of real good and ill. I can neither be harmed by any of them, for no man will involve me in wrong, nor can I be angry with my kinsman or hate him; for we have come into the world to work together." --Marcus Aurelius

Tonight a friend called to say another friend's mother had died. She was a good person, to whom I had not spoken in years. I work tomorrow. I travel for work late Sunday. We went to see a movie whose basic sci-fi fun got buried in a haze of gratuitous violence. I drove in a parking garage listening to public radio news, thinking about how power corrupts. The key is not to use the ring to fix things--the key is to throw it into a flame.

It's almost time to plant trees to replace our front yard natives, which did not survive.

approaching by train

"Well, I've always been interested in approaching a big city in a train, and I can't exactly describe the sensations, but they're entirely human and perhaps have nothing to do with aesthetics. There is a certain fear and anxiety and a great visual interest in the things that one sees coming into a great city".--Edward Hopper

I seek in my mind to always approach life as if I were riding a train from the airport to the center of a foreign and fascinating city.
