Travel to small, unvisited towns

I like to read about out-of-the-way places suitable for a visit. Today I read about Valentine, Nebraska. This town serves as the western axis of a 200-mile-long rail trail. The town stands nearly adjacent to two national wildlife refuges, each offering wildlife not common where I live. The sandhills roll nearby. I doubt that a visit to this park looms in my future--it is 135 miles from the nearest airport, and the nearest airport fails to offer non-stop service to my area.
But I like to imagine a visit, and daydream about the possibilities.
