Last night my wife and I drove to the Meyerson in downtown Dallas to see the Turtle Creek Chorale do Broadway songs. Our friend Donna's choir was participating to accompany the chorale.
The first half of the show featured Seth Rudetsky, an actor and classical music satellite radio DJ. He did an hour of "Deconstructing Broadway", a humorous exploration of what works and what does not work in Broadway song singing. He was talented, thoughtful, sarcastic and interesting.
The second half of the show featured the Chorale doing Broadway and show-tune-related songs.
The concert was very well-done, and the addition of the choirs added a lot to the full-bodied chorus' sound. When I reviewed the program,I thought I would not now many of the songs. But I knew a goodish set of them once I had heard them. I liked best their version of Stephen Schwartz's "My Testimony", the Fain/Webster song "Secret Love" from Calamity Jane, and a cover of "Over the Rainbow" which featured all the original lyrics.
We stopped at IHOP at 11:30 p.m. on our way home, and turned in very late. I overslept this morning, a bit, but got to work in good shape and got a lot done. I am getting too old for concerts on Sunday night before a Monday work day, but we had a good time last night nonetheless.
